FileMaker Drives Point of Sale Process in Tesco Stores

Tesco came to Digital Support, a FileMaker Solutions Alliance partner, looking for a solution to enable them to produce store-specific Point of Sale material, which would be as easy for staff to use as getting cash from a cash point. Originally they looked at using C++ & Visual Basic, but could not produce the system they needed in these applications. Digital Support then turned to FileMaker to pilot the solution, and found that the system was not only fully capable of automating all of Tesco¹s requirements, but was also robust and scalable.

The system is fully ODBC compliant and allows import and export of client data. Linked to a Denso hand-scanner, users can scan barcodes and produce POS material without laborious typing. By using a password, users can go straight into command mode and produce custom one off posters. The system is completely flexible, and will produce anything from business card sized POS to an A1 poster.

The FileMaker solution, named StorePoint, has enabled Tesco to drastically slash marketing costs. It has taken £3m of hard costs out of Tesco and is saving the store another £5m a year in staff resources. It allows stores to price locally, to compete on price point against rivals and to respond to local market conditions.

"Getting the point-of-sale material right is of crucial importance. An incorrectly dressed store does not sell”, said Tony Gallagher, of Tesco. "The StorePoint FileMaker solution enables us to produce marketing collateral quickly and easily saving staff time, and saving us money, by streamlining the promotional process.”
